INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating a deadly crash that happened early Saturday morning on the city's east side.
Police responded to a report of a crash shortly before 4 a.m. Sept. 14 in the 6100 block of East 34th Street, near North Arlington and Massachusetts avenues.
Officers arrived and saw a car and moped both heavily damaged. Then, officers saw a man unresponsive in the grass on the south side of East 34th Street. Medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Marion County Coroner's Office will identify the deceased once family is notified.
According to a preliminary investigation, officers believe a car was going westbound on East 34th Street and crossed the center line, striking the moped, which was going eastbound on East 34th Street.
Shortly after arriving on scene, witnesses told officers that the man driving the car tried to run westbound from the scene, but officers quickly took him into custody.
Police arrested the man after learning he has a warrant out for his arrest in Marion County. Investigators preliminarily believe intoxication was a factor in the crash, but toxicology results are pending.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision.
Police are asking people to avoid the area for the next few hours, if possible, due to the ongoing and active investigation. East 34th Street will be closed between Massachusetts Avenue and North Elizabeth Street.
