MONROE COUNTY, Indiana — Monroe Fire Protection District crews responded to a very unusual scene Thursday morning when a semi with over 160 pigs was involved a crash in Monroe County.
Around 9:45 a.m. Sept. 12, Monroe County firefighters responded to a report of a crash between a car and a semi-tractor trailer on the highway at the intersection of State Road 37 and South Old State Road 37.
When officials arrived, they weren't met with just any typical crash scene — over 160 pigs were trapped in the crashed semi.
Due to the pigs being shifted around in the incident, animal control officers were worried of them getting too hot inside of the trailer as another livestock trailer would take a while to pick them up. So, while medics checked out the drivers, who were alright, firefighters got creative and used trucks, back boards and ladders to make a temporary pen for the animals.
They also created a makeshift food trough and some hose lines to keep them cool until they were transported.
The owners said 162 pigs were being transported and nine of them died in the crash.
That stretch of the road was closed for several hours while crews worked to get the picks in a new semi cab.
