PARIS, France — The Paris 2024 Olympics are underway in France, and Hoosier athletes are already competing to represent Team USA. In fact, the first two medals the United States won came from Indiana athletes.
Here is how the athletes with Indiana connections did on Wednesday, July 31:
Alex Shackell
Carmel's Alex Shackell is competing in the 200m butterfly.
In the afternoon, the 17-year-old finished second in her semifinal with a time of 2:06.46, advancing to the final on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 2:30 p.m. ET on WTHR. Her time was the fifth fastest in the semifinal.
Earlier that morning, Shackell had the fifth fastest time of 2:07.49 during the heats, advancing to the semifinals.
Shackell will also be part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team, with the heats beginning at 6:05 a.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 1. The eight fastest teams will advance to the final later that day at 4:03 p.m. ET on WTHR.
The heats for swimming events air on USA Network and stream on Peacock.
Lilly King
Lilly King is in the final of the 200m breaststroke.
The 27-year-old Indiana University graduate from Evansville finished sixth in the semifinals with a time of 2:23.25.
The final of the 200m breaststroke is scheduled for 3:11 p.m. ET Thursday, Aug. 1 on WTHR.
In the morning's heats, King finished 11th with a time of 2:24.91, advancing to the semifinals.

On Monday, July 29, King finished tied for fourth in the final of the 100m breaststroke, with a time of 1:05.60. She finished 0.01 seconds behind the bronze medalist, Ireland's Mona McSharry. South Africa's Tatjana Smith won the event, with a time of 1:05.28.
In Sunday's semifinal, King was third overall in the 100m breaststroke in 1:05.64, compared to her Olympic Trials time of 1:05.43 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
King was seeking to become the second woman to win two Olympic golds or second to win three medals – or both – in the 100m breaststroke. She famously won gold in 2016, beating Russian rival Yulia Efimova. She took bronze in 2021 behind winner Lydia Jacoby, of the United States and silver medalist Smith.
Jessica Parratto
Indiana University graduate Jessica Parratto came up short of winning her second Olympic medal Wednesday.
In the synchronized 10m platform, Parratto and partner Delaney Schnell finished sixth with a score of 287.52, which was 16.86 points behind medaling. China's Yuxi Chen and Hongchan Quan won the gold medal with a score of 359.10.
Parratto and Schnell won a silver medal in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Rajeev Ram
Carmel native Rajeev Ram and his partner are in medal contention in men's doubles.
Ram and partner Austin Krajicek defeated Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Nadal and Alcaraz have won 26 grand slam singles titles between them.
Win or lose the next round, Ram and Krajicek will compete for a medal.
Ram and Krajicek will play the Czech Republic's Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlásek in the semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 9 a.m. ET.
In their first round match, Ram and Krajicek defeated Australia's Alex de Minaur and Alexei Popyrin 6-2, 6-3, followed by a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win against Brazil's Thiago Monteiro and Thiago Seyboth Wild in the second round.
Ram won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in mixed doubles with partner Venus Williams.
Chris Guiliano
Notre Dame's Chris Guiliano competed in the final of the 100m freestyle Wednesday.
Guiliano finished eighth with a time of 47.98, which was 0.49 seconds from the bronze medalist. China's Zhanle Pan won the gold medal and set a new world record with a time of 46.40.
Guiliano won his first gold medal in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday, July 27.
On Sunday, July 28, Guiliano competed in the 200m freestyle, finishing 19th with a time of 1:47.60 and did not advance to the next round.
Guiliano swam in two events on Tuesday, July 30: the 100m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay.
In Tuesday morning's heats for the 100m freestyle, Guiliano had a time of 48.25, which was the eighth fastest time among the 79 swimmers. That same afternoon, he competed in the event's semifinals with a time of 47.72, the seventh fastest — with eight swimmers advancing.
The United States won the silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay with a time of 7:00.78, which was 1.35 seconds behind gold medalists Great Britain.
Guiliano did not race in the final for the United States.
However, he did compete in the morning, as the United States finished first in their heat with a time of 7:05.57, which was the second fastest among both heats. Guiliano swam his 200m in 1:46.74.
Guiliano's fifth and final event is the 50m freestyle, with heats scheduled to begin at 5:16 a.m. ET Thursday, Aug. 1. Guiliano is in the 10th heat, and the 16 fastest will advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled that same day at 2:44 p.m. ET.
Josh Matheny
Josh Matheny, who goes to Indiana University, competed in final of the 200m breaststroke.
Matheny finished seventh in the final with a time of 2:09.52, which was 1.62 seconds from the bronze medalist. France's LeonM Marchand won the gold medal with a time of 2:05.85, setting an Olympic record.
On Tuesday, July 30, Matheny advanced to the final with a time of 2:09.70 in the semifinals, which was the sixth fastest among the 16 swimmers. Earlier in the day, Matheny, was among the 16 swimmers advancing to the semifinals with a time of 2:10.39, which was the 10th fastest in the heats.
Tyrese Haliburton
Indiana Pacers' All-Star Tyrese Haliburton is part of the U.S. men's basketball team.
Haliburton scored 6 points in Team USA's 103-86 win against South Sudan.
The next game in Group C play for the U.S. is Saturday, Aug. 3 at 11:15 a.m. against Puerto Rico. The game will air on WTHR.
The U.S. won its first game Sunday, July 28 against Serbia 110-84. Haliburton did not play in the game.
Annie Drews
Annie Drews, who was born in Muncie, is from Elkhart and went to Purdue University, is once again part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.
The U.S. team defeated Serbia in five sets: 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 14-25 and 17-15. Once again, Drews had the most points for the Americans, with 16.
The next match for the U.S. team is Sunday, Aug. 4 against France at 7 a.m. ET. The match will stream on Peacock.
The U.S. lost its first game in Pool A play on Monday, July 29 against China in five sets: 25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 15-13.
Drews scored the most points for the team, with 29.
Drews won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as part of the U.S. women's volleyball team.
Canyon Barry
Fort Wayne native Canyon Barry is competing in the men's 3x3 basketball event.
Barry scored 6 points – including going 4/4 in his "granny-style" free throws! – in the team's 19-17 loss to Poland.
The team continues its Pool play on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 1:05 p.m. ET against Lithuania. The game will air on USA Network.
The U.S. team lost its first game in pool play 22-14 to Serbia on Tuesday. Barry scored 2 points in team's loss. His teammates include Kareem Maddox, Jimmer Fredette and Dylan Travis.
Hannah Roberts
South Bend native Hannah Roberts competed in the BMX freestyle event.
The five-time world champion crashed out of both of her runs and failed to medal Wednesday. Deng Yawen, of China, won gold with a score of 92.60 points.
Roberts won a silver medal in the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
