CARMEL, Ind. — In Carmel, residents are celebrating their Olympic swimmers headed to Paris.
In fact, the mayor of Carmel, Sue Finkam, renamed streets in honor of swimmers Aaron and Alex Shackell, Drew Kibler and their coach Chris Plumb.
"The eyes of the world may be on them, but the hearts of Carmel residents will be with them," said Finkam.
The Shackells are nearing celebrity and hero status in Carmel, posing to take pictures and their competition is must-see TV.
"A 5 a.m. swim practice? I don't care, I'm just going to watch all of it," said 11-year-old swimmer Myles Muse. "That's like a once in four-year opportunity."
The siblings are training in Carmel just a few more days before their departure to training camp. 13News asked the siblings what they are looking most forward to in Paris.
"It's just crazy that I'll be surrounded by Olympians everywhere and I can call myself one," said Alex Shackell. "And then, I mean, just the village itself, that area."
"I'm really excited to room with a lot of Olympians and just be in the atmosphere," said Aaron Shackell. "And obviously swim at the Olympics, that will be fun. Hopefully make a final and see what I can do in that final."
Alex said these will be her last days training in her longtime pool. When she comes back from the Games, the new pool part of the dynasty and future of Carmel swimming is slated to be open.
The swimming competition in Paris starts July 27 and runs through Aug. 4.
