2 men arrested for attempted robbery of IMPD detective; 3rd suspect still at large

An undercover officer was part of an investigation when three men with guns approached his car.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two men were arrested Wednesday for the attempted robbery of an IMPD detective, the department announced Thursday.

On Aug. 14, detectives were conducting an investigation near West 52nd Street and North High School Road when an IMPD Violent Crimes Task Force detective in an unmarked car was approached by a small red Kia, the department said in a social media post.

According to court documents, the detective said three men wearing masks and gloves approached his car. All of the men had their guns drawn and pointed toward the detective's car.

When one of them got close, the detective said he heard one of the men chamber his round in a gun. The detective sped off in his car, while calling other officers for support.

The men allegedly chased the detective in the unmarked car, until marked IMPD cruisers arrived with their emergency lights active.

Detectives then followed the suspects' car, and they eventually abandoned it and ran before throwing guns into a trash can and running into a wooded area. Two of the three suspects, a 22-year-old man and 24-year-old man, were eventually taken into custody.
