INDIANA, USA — We are halfway through the "-ber" months: November brings us a big temperature drop, past peak foliage, and a big daylight loss. What will the weather be like this November?

The quick answer: colder weather and maybe some snow chances.

November typically brings 0.8" of snow to central Indiana, plus a couple inches of chilly rain. How will this November play out?

November daylight loss

The biggest driver of weather changes is the amount of daylight we get, plus the angle of the sun. Both are decreased. However November is the final full month of daylight losses. In late December we will start to slowly gain back daylight.

The most drastic losses are farther north. Over an hour of daylight will be lost for the northern Great Lakes and the states that touch Canada.

The farther south you go, the less dramatic the daylight loss will be. In Indiana we will lose just under an hour of daylight. Most Hoosiers will lose between 50 to 57 minutes of daylight by Nov. 30.

  • Indianapolis loss: 53 min
  • South Bend loss: 57 min
  • Lafayette loss: 54 min
  • Bloomington loss: 52 min
  • Evansville: 49 min

Due to those daylight losses, we are losing more heat than we are gaining in the northern hemisphere. That eventually leads to cooler air.

What is a normal November like in Indiana?

With so many swings, sometimes it's hard to know what average November weather is. However an "average" November has constant swings.

Precipitation: 3.45" of liquid (rain and melted snow)

High temperatures: lots of low 50s

The average temperature is a little misleading because of the huge drop we come to expect. On average our highs start in the upper 50s at the start of the month. By the end of the month, expect mid 40s.

Morning lows are often in the 30s. Expect some more 20s for some mornings.

What is November 2024 looking like?

Generally expect lots of swings. There will be more clouds thanks to colder air moving over the relatively warm Great Lakes. That tends to keep us cloudier.

We also expect more fog in November.

There may be a slightly warmer tendency for the eastern United States. That would include Indiana. Maybe more 50s and 60s than 40s. We'll see. There will be plenty of cold days.

There may be a chance for more precipitation in the central United States. This mostly accounts for heavy rain possible at the beginning of the month. The rest of the month is questionable. Expect stretches of dry, quiet weather, followed by a few days of clouds, showers, and rain. There is a low chance for some thunderstorms, too.
