County-by-county list of when to expect frost, freezes this week | Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog

The coldest air since April is diving south toward Indiana with the chance for our first frost and freeze arriving midweek.

INDIANA, USA — A powerful cold front will spark lake effect clouds and showers for the start of the week, followed by the chance for a frost and freeze across much of Indiana. This will be the coldest air we have had since April.

This may not be a killing freeze, but there may be damage to sensitive plants outside. Bring in plants by Tuesday night.

Tap HERE for a timeline of the cold front as it pushes south with clouds and spotty rain chances.

The good news is that this cold snap will only last a few days. We may be back in the 70s by the coming weekend.

This cold front is going all the way to the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Ocean. Everyone east of the Rockies will have a north wind by Wednesday morning.

Frost and freeze chances

Once we get down to the mid-30s, the chance for frost increases. When we forecast low temperatures, we are forecasting for the air 5 feet above the ground (sometimes airports may place the thermometer between 3 feet to 9 feet). It's meant to forecast the air around our chest and heads.

However, the air closer to the ground for plants is usually a few degrees cooler:

  • Weather forecast: 35 degrees
  • Air temperature by the ground may be 30-33 degrees

Wednesday frost chances

Lots of mid-30s are likely across central Indiana, increasing the chance for our first widespread frost. Lake Michigan may keep temperatures a touch warmer to the north. There may also be some slightly warmer air along the Ohio River.

Frost can damage very sensitive plants but usually does not kill them.

Thursday frost and freeze chances

Low and mid-30s are likely for Thursday morning. That means air temperatures by the ground may be in the upper 20s. That may produce a freeze for much of north-central Indiana. It will at least be frosty.

Light blue areas show frost. Purple areas show chances for a freeze.
