INDIANAPOLIS — We just had our biggest daylight gain of any week for the entire year. It is always centered around the spring equinox. We have been gaining about 18 minutes this week for central Indiana.
Every day, we have been gaining 2 minutes and 37 seconds in Indianapolis — and even more seconds farther north. We have finally gained enough daylight to give us 8 p.m. sunsets starting this weekend. Twilight or dusk will last until roughly 9 p.m.
Because of the curvature of the Earth, the rate at which you gain daylight is dependent on your latitude, or how far north you live. Northern Indiana is gaining daylight slightly faster than southern Indiana.
We will gain daylight until June 20. Sunsets on that day will be at 9:16 p.m. for Indianapolis. After that, we will start losing daylight again. It will start at a very slow rate, basically unnoticeable. The losses will pick up in August and September.
What will the weather be like this weekend?
After a cold front hits Friday night, temperatures will drop for the weekend. Expect 40s on Saturday and 50s on Sunday. Northeast winds will last much of the weekend. The sunshine will make a big difference though!
Even though the temperatures are cool, it may feel a touch warmer with the sunshine and when the wind is blocked.
