INDIANAPOLIS — Lane restrictions along Capitol Avenue in downtown Indy are expected to start on Monday, July 15.
According to officials, this is due to underground utility and construction work near Indiana University Health's new downtown hospital project.
One lane of through traffic and IndyGo Red Line bus traffic will be open between 14th and 16th streets.
Starting Aug. 12, Capitol Avenue between 14th and 16th streets is expected to be closed to traffic through Aug. 23. Officials said traffic heading southbound on Capitol Avenue will be detoured to Meridian Street. Officials added that IndyGo Red Line buses will continue to service riders at the 14th and Capitol bus stop.
A single lane of through traffic on Capitol Avenue will reopen on Aug. 24, with the lane restrictions expected to last through Oct. 4. Officials noted that IndyGo Red Line riders and services will not be impacted by these changes as one lane of traffic will be maintained to allow northbound and southbound IndyGo service through Capitol Avenue.
"All entrances to IU Health Methodist Hospital will remain accessible, but drivers should allow for extra commute time and travel with caution in the area," a spokesperson for IU Health said.
Officials said travelers whose destination is not the hospital may want to avoid the area.
