INDIANAPOLIS — The new $2.3 billion hospital in downtown Indianapolis is expected to open in late 2027.
IU Health is developing a new hospital to expand their medical campus to meet the needs of future patient care and attract top medical and research professionals, according to a news release.
The new hospital will combine adult care services at Methodist and University hospitals. By consolidating, officials said this will save both hospitals $50 million a year in operating costs.
The hospital's formal name has not yet been announced.
Officials said the new hospital will be the centerpiece of a 44-acre campus that will have more than 2 million square feet of space, consist of three towers and stand 16 stories tall.
"It's really starting to look really great," said Dr. Ryan Nagy, president of IU Health Methodist and University hospitals.
Nagy, along with other administrators, provided an update on the 44-acre project, which is impossible to miss from the near north side. Cranes dot the skyline as more than 500 construction workers build the new hospital.
Patients will be able to receive a wide range of care services including surgery, medical imaging, clinical research trials and care for a variety of medical conditions, the release said. The hospital will support three clinical institutes: cancer, cardiovascular and neuroscience.
The new hospital will also have 50 operating rooms and 380 outpatient exam rooms.
It will be able to accommodate 864 beds, and all rooms will be private. Health officials noted that this count is comparable to the current licensed beds at Methodist and University hospitals.
"We're going to have a campus here where people will train, live, work and perform research here," Nagy said.
The hospital's campus will have four bus route stops, nine bike parking locations and spaces for electrical vehicle charging.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the trajectory of health in Indiana," said Jim Mladuchy, VP of design and construction for IU Health. "We're the only academic medical center in the state, and this will allow us to be able to attract and retain the best and brightest for all Hoosiers."
The expansion of the IU Health Methodist Hospital campus extends from 16th to 12th streets and from Capitol Avenue west to I-65. The main entrance to the hospital will be located off Senate Avenue, just south of 16th Street.
