INDIANAPOLIS — It's time for the Fever Minute ahead of Indiana's home opener against the New York Liberty. Here are the three keys to victory tonight:
- Limit turnovers - This is a problem that followed the Fever throughout the preseason into the regular season opener on Tuesday night against the Sun. The Fever committed 25 turnovers as a team against Connecticut, and Caitlin Clark contributed 10. Those numbers have to decrease—and decrease a lot—for the Fever to have sustained success this season. The New York Liberty feature two of the best players in the game in Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, and they will take advantage of turnovers if this continues to be an issue for the Fever.
- Play inside out - Caitlin Clark draws a lot of deserved attention on the court as far as double teams and physical defense goes. The Fever are incredibly talented down low. NaLyssa Smith is a former second overall draft pick. Aliyah Boston is obviously a former top overall pick and reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year. Getting those two going early in games will open things up beyond the three-point line for the Fever. Boston is incredibly skilled in the post, and Smith is primed for a breakout season on the offensive end. Dominating the post early in games will free up players like Kelsey Mitchell, Katie Lou Samuelson and, of course, Caitlin Clark to get better looks from deep.
- Stay out of foul trouble, and have fun - It's just basketball! It is unwise to overreact to one singular game. This is a young team, a deep team, a talented and complimentary team. They will figure it out. We saw early fouls from Clark both in preseason and in the regular season opener. It's difficult to establish a rhythm when you are picking up two fouls halfway through the first quarter. This team is still building chemistry together, and that will take time. Rest assured — this is a youthful team that will get better as the season goes on.
