INDIANAPOLIS — While the U.S. Olympic Swim Team heads to Paris, Indianapolis is cleaning up after the nine-day trials.
Crews spent Monday, June 24 inside Lucas Oil Stadium and on Georgia Street tearing down every fan attraction — including the Eiffel Tower replica. But to get the tower here, it took months of planning.
"We went through several designs on what the tower could look like and how we can customize it to embody Indy," Consuelo Lockhart said.
The Latinas Welding Guild spent months perfecting this 66-foot, 14,000-pound replica. Once it was placed on Georgia Street, it was a must-see throughout the trials.
It became the backdrop to thousands of photos and one couple's wedding.
"Just being able to watch people's responses has been really cool," Lockhart said.
As crews started to take the tower down, the biggest question is where is it going next? Well, there is no official plan yet, but the city is looking at various options.
Indiana Sports Corp told 13News, "We will be storing it as we discuss options with a few different parties who have shown interest."
Lockhart said she hopes it becomes a permanent part of Indy's history.
"Hopefully it has a forever home somewhere," Lockhart said. "I know wherever it goes, it will have a lot of love and attention."
Lockhart said she hopes the new home is near the canal. But right now, her team is getting ready for the next big project.
