With his win in the Sonsio Grand Prix, Alex Palou takes over the championship lead heading into the Indianapolis 500. He holds a 12 point lead over Will Power.

Colton Herta entered the race as the points leader, but after his 7th place finish, he drops to fourth in the championship standings, 25 points behind Palou.

RACE UPDATES

Lap 85 — Alex Palou brings it home to win back-to-back Sonsio Grands Prix.

Lap 84 — Alex Palou receives the white flag. Barring any mistakes, he's set to win his second Indy GP in a row.

Lap 78 — Alex Palou has stretched his advantage over second place Will Power to nearly four seconds as the race reaches its closing laps.

Lap 71 — Josef Newgarden makes an unscheduled pit stop for a new front wing.

Lap 70 — At the tail end of the field, Jack Harvey blocks Josef Newgarden all the way down to the pit wall on the frontstretch heading into turn one. The replay shows the right rear tire of Harvey's car and the front wing of Newgarden made contact, possibly damaging the front wing of the No. 2. Christian Rasmussen runs wide into the first turn to avoid a collision.

Lap 69 — The green flag comes back out and Will Power attacks Alex Palou into turn one. Palou locks up his tires and pushes Power wide to keep the lead.

Lap 67 — A replay shows Ghiotto getting his rear wheels on the grass at the exit of turn 11 and spinning across the track before stalling to bring out the yellow flag.

Lap  66 — Scott McLaughlin is the final car to pit during the cycle as the lead goes back to Alex Palou. However, the first full-course caution of the day is thrown for Luca Ghiotto's stalled car.

Lap 62 — All the leaders, Alex Palou, Christian Lundgaard and Will Power hit pit lane. Palou and Lundgaard both put on sticker reds while Power puts on used reds. Power, however, beats Lundgaard off pit road to take over net-second place.

Lap 61 — Colton Herta begins the next cycle of pit stops and is joined by Josef Newgarden.

Lap 57 — Santino Ferrucci brings his No. 14 A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet onto pit road and climbs out of the car looking upset. He is the race's first retirement. After the first caution flag, he explained that the car had experienced several mechanical issues throughout the course of the race and the team decided it was best to retire rather than risk further damage.

Lap 55 — Rinus VeeKay is assessed a drive-through penalty for improper pit exit.

Lap 46 — Scott McLaughlin, Romain Grosjean and Luca Ghiotto finally pit, bringing an end to the second pit cycle. Alex Palou, on alternate tires, inherits the race lead over Christian Lundgaard (primary tires) and Will Power (alternates).

Lap 42 — Lundgaard is held up behind lapped traffic and Will Power still can't get by Marcus Ericsson, which has allowed Alex Palou to take over the net race lead.

Lap 41 — Christian Lundgaard responds to Power's pit stop an hits the pitlane. A 6.9 second stop just barely keeps him in front of Will Power. Lundgaard did have some help as Marcus Ericsson held up Power as he was entering turn one and attempting to pass Lundgaard.

Lap 39 — Will Power attempts the undercut on Lundgaard by making a surprise dip into pit road before the race leader. Power's stop was seven seconds flat and he puts on a scuff set of red tires.

Lap 38 — Will Power has closed the gap to Christian Lundgaard to roughly half a second as Lundgaard battles through lapped traffic.

Lap 36 — The second pit window of the race is open. Josef Newgarden pits for a set of primaries, falling to 24th place in the process.

Lap 30 — Rinus VeeKay brings his No. 21 down pit road due to a tire issue. Meanwhile, sixth-place Graham Rahal reports a vibration on his No. 15 Honda.

Lap 24 — Pietro Fittipaldi stays out the longest and finally makes his first pit stop on lap 24 for a new set of alternate tires. The stop drops him to P11. Tom Blomqvist, attempting to pass Fittipaldi on Pietro's out lap, locks up his tires at the end of Hulman Boulevard and goes off track.

Lap 22 — Alexander Rossi pits from second for a set of alternate tires. He cycles out to 14th place, just behind teammate Pato O'Ward.

Lap 21 — Several cars have yet to pit. Graham Rahal, Alexander Rossi, Pietro Fittipaldi, Scott McLaughlin, Marcus Ericsson and Luca Ghiotto pace the field, but the net race leader continues to be Christian Lundgaard.

Lap 20 — Will Power, after having a few laps to warm up his brand new alternate tires, attacks Alex Palou, who was still on cold tires, to take over the net-second position.

Lap 19 — Both Christian Lundgaard and Alex Palou pit at the end of lap 19. Palou sheds his alternate tires for a set of primaries while Lundgaard beats the defending series champion off pit road after taking on a pair of alternate tires. Will Power, who pitted a few laps earlier, joins the leaders.

Lap 18 — Christian Lundgaard, on a set of primary tires, continues to lead Alex Palou by roughly a full second. Palou started the race on alternate tires. Josef Newgarden pits for a set of primaries from the ninth position.

Lap 17 — Pato O'Ward pits from the eighth position for a set of alternate tires. Will Power pits from P3 for their only set of sticker alternates.

Lap 15 — Agustin Canapino and Santino Ferrucci make their first green-flag pit stops of the afternoon.

Lap 14 — Kyle Kirkwood makes a pit stop, as does Kyffin Simpson. Christian Lundgaard maintains a one second lead over Alex Palou.

Lap 10 — The first round of green-flag pit stops have begun just ten laps in to an 85 lap race. Meanwhile, Marcus Ericsson has been penalized five positions for avoidable contact with his teammate Colton Herta.

Lap 2 — More controversy on-track between Santino Ferrucci and Romain Grosjean as Ferrucci pushes the Frenchman off the track at the final turn.

Lap 1 — A chaotic lap one sees several cars near the rear of the field crash. No yellow is thrown as second-place starter Christian Lundgaard leads the first lap after pole-sitter Alex Palou locked up his brakes entering the first corner.

PRE-RACE

The morning warmup session was rather action-packed. Chip Ganassi Racing's sophomore driver Marcus Armstrong topped the time charts as the only driver to lay down a lap time in the one minute, nine second range.

Pole-sitter Alex Palou was fourth quickest in the morning warmup.

A bit of drama between Santino Ferrucci and Romain Grosjean stirred up some controversy on track. During an install lap, Ferrucci tailgated Grosjean on the pit lane and the two ran near each other until the two exited turn 10.

Grosjean attempted to pass Ferrucci, but did not appear to give Ferrucci enough room. Ferrucci kept his foot in the gas and pushed Grosjean's No. 78 up the race track. Ferrucci was then seen on a replay giving Grosjean an obscene hand gesture.

Ferrucci told the television broadcast Grosjean drove into him during the morning warmup during the previous race weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.

"It's not Formula 1 anymore," said Ferrucci to NBC Sports. "You wanna turn into me when I have the inside? I'm not lifting."

Ferrucci clarified he "didn't have a beef" with Grosjean, but was frustrated with the way he has been raced recently by the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, disaster struck for fifth-place qualifier Pato O'Ward. The Chevrolet engine in his No. 5 Arrow McLaren machine gave up in the morning warmup, forcing the team to change the engine.

According to 13Sports director Dave Calabro, the engine O'Ward blew was an old engine. Mechanics worked tirelessly to install a brand new Chevrolet power unit just three and a half hours prior to the start of the race.
