Brownstown Central wins first boys basketball state championship with 55-36 win over Wapahani

Wapahani entered as the sentimental favorite, but could not keep up with Brownstown Central's hot shooting.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Brownstown Central Braves won their first boys basketball state championship after defeating the sentimental favorite Wapahani Raiders 55-36 Saturday afternoon.

Wapahani entered the game boasting a 26-2 record while having a large amount of fan support following March 14 severe storms that devastated the town of Selma, near where the school is located.

Brownstown Central arrived at Gainbridge Fieldhouse after posting a 27-4 record and hungry to avenge last year's loss to Linton-Stockton at semi-state.

From the moment of tip-off to the final whistle, the Braves looked to be in control. Brownstown Central went on a 12-3 run in the first quarter, putting added pressure on the Raiders to keep up. Senior guard Jack Benter scored eight first quarter points for the Braves while junior guard Chace Coomer added six.

As the fourth quarter began, Wapahani was running out of time to complete their historic state finals run. Isaac Andrews was held to just four points in the final quarter, with only senior forward Nick Cook and guard Eli Andrews scoring one basket each.
