Paris Olympics | U.S. divers finish the Games with 1 medal

It is the fewest diving medals by the United States since a back-to-back shutout at Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004.

SAINT-DENIS, France —  David Boudia retired as a diver after narrowly missing a fourth Olympic team in 2021.

The Americans might need Boudia, 35, back on the platform or springboard.

U.S. divers ended with one medal at the Paris Olympics, won on day 1 by the 3-meter synchronized team of Kassidy Cook and Indianapolis’ Sarah Bacon.

It is the fewest diving medals by the United States since a back-to-back shutout at Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004.

At least Boudia, of Noblesville, was in Beijing for experience. He totaled four medals in 20 in the next two Olympics, including gold on 10-meter platform in 2012.

Before Paris, Americans had totaled 10 medals from 2012, 2016 and 2021.

The last American up at the Aquatics Centre was Purdue’s Brandon Loschiavo, who finished 17th in semifinals of 10-meter Saturday. He had two weeks to prepare because Team USA did not learn until July 25 that it had received an additional spot.

"I wasn't expecting to even get past the first dive, so I'm just grateful I've been able to compete,” Loschiavo said. “On two weeks of training, I've been able to surprise myself, so I'm keeping my chin high. Taking a month off in between a competition is not something I ever want to do. What I've been able to do within this short time frame, I'm pretty happy."

He scored 372.45 points in the semifinal, highlighted by 73.10 points on a reverse 3 ½ tuck and 72 points on an inward 3 ½ tuck. He was 13th in Friday’s preliminary round.

Loschiavo is coached at Purdue by Boudia, who took over from Adam Soldati. Soldati was recently diagnosed with ALS.

The U.S. Olympic diving coach is Drew Johansen of Indiana University.
