SHELBY COUNTY, Indiana — The Shelby County Emergency Management Agency announced it is mourning the loss of the county's first full time Emergency Management Director.

SCEMA wrote Monday that Mike Schantz had unfortunately died and shared a few words about his time with the agency.

It said Schantz was "instrumental in the development of the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency along with getting Shelby County certified as National Weather Service 'Storm Ready County' in 2010 and the certification still applies to Shelby County today."

Part of that certification was helping the county implement tornado sirens that warn locals when a tornado warning is issued.

"Mike, you will be missed dearly and Shelby County will not be the same without you! Rest in peace dear friend," the agency posted.
