Record number of people have Thanksgiving weekend travel plans

According to the TSA, 2.7 million travelers will pass through airport terminals nationwide on Wednesday.

INDIANAPOLIS — "I booked these tickets way in advance to make sure I could get a Tuesday flight when it was more chill," said Erin Donovan, who is traveling to Baton Rouge from Indianapolis.

And she was right to do so.

According to Transportation Security Administration at the Indianapolis International Airport, 2.7 million travelers will pass through terminals nationwide on Wednesday.

"If you haven't traveled this year, the most important thing to know is leave everything in your carry-on luggage. In years past, where you've taken things out, we want you to leave it in. We have new equipment that has the capability to scan all that and allow the operator to be able to resolve it," said Aaron Batt, TSA director for Indiana.

For those with their pedal to the pavement, even Siri can't stop some of the traffic delays.

"It's another three more hours of driving time according to the lady in the phone," laughed David Thompson.

AAA forecasts more than 49 million people will drive over 50 miles this Thanksgiving weekend with the busiest day being Wednesday between 2 and 6 p.m.

"Maintain the traffic pattern, because if you're driving a different speed from the others, that will cause problems and could cause a wreck and if someone gets impatient because of you and causes a wreck in front of you, it's going to delay you a lot more than simply going slow," instructed James Mercier, who is headed back home to Texas from Ft. Wayne.

For those driving, AAA reports the best time to hit the road is before 11 a.m. For those flying, the best time to be at the airport is 2-3 hours before your departure time, as usual.
