FRANKLIN, Ind — One local library is hosting a free shop for teenagers who can't afford formal attire for their upcoming homecoming dances.

The Johnson County Public Library is bringing its sixth Project Prom Homecoming Pop-Up Shop event behind the Franklin Branch building Saturday Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teens in need can browse and choose donated dresses, suits, shoes and accessories, all free of charge.

“During our spring Project Prom events, the fancier prom dresses dominate. The shorter and more casual dresses tend to hang around. We decided to try a pop-up program for homecoming dances, and they were a hit," said Kelly Staten, the JCPL Programming Manager. We put out the short dresses for the pop-up event and held the full formal gowns back for the spring prom event."

If you'd like to help support the event or donate any new or gently used items, you can give them to any JCPL branch.

In 2023, the event helped give away 31 dresses and seven suits. Students do not have to live in Johnson County to participate.
