Indy Parks offers free ways to battle brutal temps

Many Indiana counties were under a heat advisory Monday, with feels-like temperatures in the triple digits.

INDIANAPOLIS — Brutally hot temperatures have arrived in central Indiana.

Many counties were under a heat advisory Monday, with feels-like temperatures in the triple digits.

"Oh yeah, super hot," said Christian Alvarenga of Indianapolis.

Alvarenga spent Monday morning at Indy Park's Municipal Gardens Family Center and splash pad with his young daughter.

"Just going through the water, keeping us cool," said Alvarenga.

Municipal Gardens is just one of about 20 family centers and splash pad locations across Indianapolis. Most are open daily and serve as a place for families to cool down from the extreme heat.

"Entering the family centers on days like today is totally free," said Alex Courtwright with Indy Parks. "The splash pads are free. That's still a good way to get outside, make sure the kids can spend some time outside and not overheat."

You can find the full list of locations here.

Courtwright also suggests limiting time outdoors and wearing plenty of sunscreen.

"Just because you're at a pool or a splash pad doesn't mean you shouldn't be hydrating," said Courtwright. "That's the other big thing."

The heat comes at a time when some central Indiana families are still waiting on power to be restored after weekend storms.

As of Monday evening, several AES customers were still waiting on power to be restored. The company shared these tips for customers before, during and after a power outage, especially during extreme heat:

  • Check on your elderly neighbors.
  • Do not use your neighbor's power for your house.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed to help preserve food longer.
