LAKE COUNTY, Ind — Indiana State Police are investigating after an off-duty deputy town marshal fired shots at a vehicle on I-65 in Lake County Saturday.
The incident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Troopers responded to a call of a driver firing shots. It started when 42-year-old James W. Schultz of Meridian, Mississippi rear-ended another driver, 34-year-old George E. Glossop. Glossop is the deputy town marshal of Thorntown in Boone County.
Both drivers stopped and got out of their vehicles after the crash, and a confrontation took place, according to ISP. Schultz allegedly swung and threw a knife at Glossop.
Then Schultz got back into his vehicle and tried to leave the scene, which is when Glossop — who was off-duty at the time — fired a 9mm handgun at the tires of Schultz's car, disabling the vehicle.
Investigators believe Schultz was under the influence at the time of the incident. He failed field sobriety tests, then initially refused to take a chemical test for intoxication, according to police. He later agreed to a blood draw at the hospital while troopers applied for a search warrant to do the test. The results have not yet been made available.
Schultz was taken to the Lake County Jail. The investigation in the incident is ongoing as police continue to look into the circumstances leading up to shots being fired.
The Thorntown Police Department issued a statement to 13News saying Glossop is now suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
