Former Wayne Township firefighter dies from injuries suffered in 1995 firetruck crash

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wayne Township Fire Department announced one of its former firefighters died from injuries suffered on the job nearly 30 years.

The fire department said Rodrick Shane Lambert died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. He was 52 years old.

According to the fire department, Lambert died from paralysis and other complications he suffered on May 24, 1995, when a firetruck he was in overturned. Wayne Township firefighter Ronald Deer died in the crash.

The fire department said Lambert served the community for three years and was a dedicated and valued department member.

"Over the last 30 years, Rod was a fixture at Wayne Township fire stations, visiting often and bringing his incredible spirit and smile, inspiring others to never give up on life's challenges," Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Eric Banister said in a news release.

Funeral service arrangements will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, located at 4141 N. High School Road in Indianapolis. Visitation starts at 10 a.m., and the service begin at noon.

Lambert will be buried in the Hero's of Public Safety Memorial at Crown Hill Cemetery following the service.

The public is invited to stand along the processional route to pay their respects. The processional is scheduled to begin between 1:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. and will follow this route: leave from 4141 N. High School Road, Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, and proceed east on 38th Street to Boulevard Place. South on Boulevard Place to the entrance of Crown Hill Cemetery.

Wayne Township is located on the west side of Indianapolis.
