Construction worker dies in overnight crash on I-65 downtown

State police arrested a woman for DUI after the crash in a construction zone near the North Split.

INDIANAPOLIS — A traffic accident on Interstate 65 in downtown Indianapolis left a construction worker dead early Saturday morning.

State police say 23-year-old David Vasquez Jr. of Terre Haute was killed when he was struck in a construction zone just south of the North Split around midnight.

Police arrested 24-year-old Cheyenne Prass of Indianapolis on the preliminary charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death.

Crash investigators said the right lane of I-65 was temporarily closed for construction when a passenger car driven by Prass was approaching the construction zone in the right lane.

When she failed to merge to the left, she instead swerved to the right to avoid hitting the arrow board indicating the lane closure.

Prass was driving on the right shoulder where Vasquez was standing. After striking him, Prass hit a parked construction truck, then spun back into traffic striking a semi and another vehicle.

Medics pronounced Vasquez dead at the scene.

There were no other injuries to anyone in the vehicles involved.

All lanes of the highway have since reopened.

Prass' actual charges will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.
