INDIANAPOLIS — It’s been three weeks now since Jessica Doty Whitaker was shot and killed on the canal. And so far there have still been no arrests.
Whitaker was killed early the morning following Independence Day, after a group she was with reportedly got into a racially charged argument with another group.
Her friends say Whitaker yelled out “All lives matter” and moments later she was shot.
“I feel lost. I’m still waiting for her to come running through the door,” said Arlena Doty, Whitaker’s mother. “I don’t believe any words is worth somebody taking their life.”
Whitaker's family and friends call her death a hate crime and Saturday called for a federal investigation.
“I think that if the FBI needs to get involved they should get involved lets find this person. I don’t want her to go in an unsolved case,” Doty said.
Whitaker's pastor says he plans to send letters to senators Todd Young and Mike Braun in the coming days to request FBI involvement.
