2 shootings at near east Indy gas station draws attention to safety issues

Another shooting happened on Friday just after midnight at the gas station at 10th and Rural streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — Monday afternoon, people could be seen fueling up at a gas station on the corner of 10th and Rural streets on the east side of Indianapolis.

But too often at night, neighbors say gunshots are heard coming from that same parking lot.

"What if I'm in the gas station getting a soda and somebody's bad day turns into my bad day? So there is cause for concern, but as of now, I mind my own business and stay to myself," Robin "Rainbow" McRae said.

Another shooting happened on Friday just after midnight at the gas station. You can see three of the four men firing their guns at a van leaving the parking lot.

13News showed the video to City-County Councilman Jesse Brown who represents the area.

"It's very clear it's being used as a place of business other than the gas station business," said Brown, who represents District 13.

Brown said he spoke to the owner of the gas station and so did 13News reporter Chase Houle.

When Houle asked the owner if he plans on hiring some sort of security, the owner said he can't afford it.

"So, maybe it's not 100% of the bill is managed by the owner of the Marathon here. Maybe it's we find grants, maybe we can find ways for the community to pitch in. Maybe we can do a neighborhood block watch. You know, civilians can try and get involved. Maybe IMPD can run patrols for a couple of hours at night to give a security a break midway through," Brown said.

Like Brown, his constituents also want to see investments in their community.

"More jobs. People coming in and willing to give us chances and not judging us by our appearance," McRae said.

Over the last week, IMPD has told 13News that officers will self-dispatch themselves to the area to make their presence known.
