Near east Indy businesses forced to close after overnight shooting shatters windows

Jeff Miner said when he came to open his pizza shop Friday morning, his window was broken and glass was everywhere.

INDIANAPOLIS — Jeff Miner could be seen turning away customers Friday night after a bullet went through the front window of his pizza shop on 10th and Rural streets on the near east side of Indianapolis.

"It hurts. It hurts to turn people away, but I got to do what's best for me," said Miner, who owns Sam's Square Pie.

Miner said when he came to open the shop Friday morning, his window was broken and glass was everywhere.

"When it happens to you, it really hits hard and, honestly, it took me about an hour-and-a-half to figure out I needed to close today because all of the glass everywhere," he said. "I didn't want to have any customer having to deal with glass that they're looking at and I've been cleaning the floors all day because glass was sprayed everywhere."

A business nearby shared surveillance video of the shooting with 13News:

IMPD says they did respond to a shots fired call from a gas station at 10th and Rural around midnight.

Just last week, 13News showed you security video from the same gas station of a man getting shot and killed.

"I want to see more police presence. I want to see cameras that work. Cameras in the vicinity of our business," said Miner.

In a statement from IMPD last week, they said officers self-dispatch themselves in the area to show a police presence.

But no matter what, Miner said he's not going to let the crime in the area drive him out because he came there for the people.

"I mean, this is a food desert. Let's get right to the point. This provides an element of reprieve to the food desert and the area needs places like these open," said Miner.

IMPD tells 13News that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Miners said he plans to reopen the pizza shop on Saturday, July 13.
