Indianapolis man convicted in cousin's murder on city's northeast side

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. Dec. 28, 2022, in the 3400 block of Alsuda Court, near Binford Boulevard and East 46th Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — A jury convicted an Indianapolis man for the murder of his cousin on the city's northeast side in December 2022.

After a three-day jury trial, Emmanuel Newman was found guilty in the deadly shooting of 31-year-old Joshua Hopson.

Around 3 a.m. Dec. 28, 2022, IMPD officers responded to a report of a person shot at an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Alsuda Court, near Binford Boulevard and East 46th Street.

Officers arrived and found Hopson with multiple gunshot wounds lying in front of the building. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, Hopson's girlfriend said Hopson was arguing with Newman before the shooting. She said Newman left but returned a short time later.

Hopson's girlfriend said Hopson then went outside and she followed behind him. She said she heard multiple gunshots, and Hopson fell to the ground. She said Newman then ran from the scene.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the apartment complex and a private camera, which showed Newman carrying a rifle and approaching Hopson as he stepped outside.

According to the prosecutor's office, the footage then shows Newman firing multiple shots at Hopson, and then stepping over him to fire more shots directly at him before leaving in his car.

On Jan. 5, 2023, detectives with IMPD's Violent Crimes Unit took Newman into custody and transported him to the homicide office. Newman was later arrested and charged with murder.

"This type of violence among family members is horrific and unsettling," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement. "The defendant allowed a simple dispute to escalate, and now he and this family will be grappling with the devastating consequences for years to come. We are grateful that the jury came to this resolution and our thoughts are with the family as we approach the sentencing portion of the proceedings."

A sentencing hearing has not been been set at this time.
