45 domestic violence-related homicides reported in Indiana this year

Activists highlight the danger of domestic violence and what survivors need to make it through.

INDIANAPOLIS — In two days, 13News has reported on two tragic domestic violence situations.

The first was over the weekend where a Lafayette man is facing preliminary charges of domestic battery and attempted murder of his wife. Prosecutors are still determining charges in the death of his infant son.

The other was the following day when IMPD says a former IMPD reserve officer shot and killed himself and a woman and injured two teens.

The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence told 13News that they see cases like this far too often. So far this year, the group has reported about 45 domestic-related homicides in the state.

"It is unfortunately all too common that this is a situation where we don't see it coming," Caryn Burton said.

This year, 13News has reported on at least four domestic-related homicides where someone was shot and killed. Burton said the majority of these homicides are shootings.

"You cannot put a bullet back into a gun — as soon as you cause harm or pull that firearm, the likelihood that somebody is going to be grievously harmed, wounded or killed is massive," Burton said.

Burton said these homicides range from an abusive partner killing a victim, murder-suicides, to a victim killing in self-defense. She said no matter the situation, many lives are affected by this violence, and people need to create a larger support system for victims.

"That is the most critical thing survivors need, and when they are ready and abled and feel prepared, then they are being supported and reach out for help," Burton said.
