INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers swarmed a southwest side neighborhood Monday afternoon after getting reports of shots fired coming from an abandoned home on Collier Street, near Kentucky Avenue and Mann Road.
Officers say they found 31-year-old Brian Hendricks dead inside on Jan. 29.
"We haven't confirmed if this person was shot. That will come out as this investigation continues," IMPD Ofc. William Young said.
Neighbors said the home caught fire about a year ago.
Before the fire, neighbors said the home had been vacant for some time and expressed concern over it.
"It's boarded up and has been boarded up for awhile. And then, it caught fire. They don't really do anything about it," a neighbor said.
"They" — meaning the owner or landlord.
In a search of the property in online real estate records from the city of Indianapolis, 13News discovered the home is managed by Horizon Trust Company out of Minnesota.
"Who's going to make them take responsibility? Indiana? The police? You know they pay their state taxes and the state doesn't care. But when you have some horrible happen — and the police get involved — then maybe it's time for the police to say, 'OK, you know, something needs to be done so we don't have another horrible thing to happen,'" the neighbor told 13News.
IMPD is continuing to investigate Hendricks' death as a homicide. They encourage anyone with information to contact IMPD Det. Jose Torres at 317-327-3475 or by email at Jose.Torres@indy.gov, or call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
