Sixth person arrested after deadly shooting of 15-year-old boy in Muncie

The incident was reported around 10 p.m. Aug. 14 at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of North Elgin Street, near East McGalliard Road.

MUNCIE, Ind. — UPDATE: A sixth person has been arrested in connection to the deadly shooting.

The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office has filed formal charges against four teenagers for their alleged roles in the deadly shooting of a 15-year-old boy in Muncie.

Here are the charges each person is facing:

  • Robert Graham III, 17, of Muncie — murder, with a firearm sentence enhancement; robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; obstruction of justice
  • K-Shaun English, 16, of Muncie — murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; obstruction of justice
  • Dasha Eckford, 19, of Muncie — conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; aiding, inducing or causing robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; obstruction of justice
  • Ricky Nathan, 19, of Muncie — conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; aiding, inducing or causing robbery resulting in serious bodily injury; obstruction of justice

On Friday, Aug. 23, a judge ordered that both Graham and English would be held at the Delaware County Jail without bond. They are being moved from a juvenile detention facility because they are charged as adults.

On Thursday, Aug. 22, the prosecutor's office filed a murder charge against English.

On that same day, a 21-year-old man was arrested on a preliminary charge of conspiracy to commit robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Police say he walked with the group that allegedly killed the Latajohne Phillips, but didn't participate in the shooting.

The 21-year-old allegedly identified all of the other suspects and said they were going to trade guns. He told police the group told him to stay back, and that he ran away when he heard the first shot.

The prosecutor's office said it is also filing a petition with the juvenile court for permission to file formal charges against a 14-year-old boy for his alleged role in the incident.

The incident was reported around 10 p.m. Aug. 14 at The Latitude Apartments in the 2900 block of North Elgin Street, near East McGalliard Road.

According to court documents, a woman walking her dog said she heard a loud "boom" and found a person in a bush behind the front office of The Latitude Apartments.

Responding officers located the teen who had been shot. Court documents say he had gunshot wounds to his head and left leg.

He was taken in critical condition to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as Latajohne Phillips.

The Muncie Central High School football coach said Phillips was a freshman on the team.

"I'm devastated, complete and utter disbelief." said Lashona Gillard, Latajohne's legal guardian. "If I could trade places with him, I would, because he deserves to shine. He deserves to have his goals and live his goals and live his dreams. I would give up my life in an instant for my baby."

According to court documents, surveillance video shows a group of six people leaving Elgin Manor Apartments around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday. Approximately 10 minutes later, five of the same people can be seen in surveillance video running back toward Elgin Manor Apartments from the direction of The Latitude Apartments.

Court documents say two minutes after the five people returned, the sixth person is seen walking back into Elgin Manor Apartments from the direction of The Latitude Apartments.

Officers spoke with Eckford, who said she was walking with the group but did not go toward The Latitude Apartments because she "did not trust the situation," so Eckford said she stopped where she was and waited for the males to return.

According to court documents, Eckford told officers that she heard two gunshots and then saw all of the males return with "weird looks on their face." She claims she asked the males what happened, but she told officers that none of the males would tell her.

Court documents say when officers showed Eckford an image from the surveillance video and asked her who had the gun, Eckford allegedly pointed out one of the people.
