200+ Crime Stoppers set to train in Indy this weekend

Starting Sept. 13, more than 200 crime stoppers from more than 80 different organizations are expected downtown.

INDIANAPOLIS — “If you see something, say something," Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana President Dale Needleman said.

That's his message to Hoosiers ahead of the 2024 Crime Stoppers USA National Training Conference. It's being held in Indianapolis for the very first time.

Starting Sept. 13, more than 200 crime stoppers from over 80 different organizations are expected downtown.

"It's an opportunity to learn best practices, share with other organizations how they do it, and hear from professional organizations on new waves of crime and different things occurring in cities around the country," Needleman said.

The conference lasts four days, each filled with sessions from national experts, including the FBI. It's all designed to keep tips confidential and communities safe, Needleman said.

"In central Indiana, our program serves 18 counties around the city of Indianapolis," Needleman said. "There's a lot of crime going on in there, and we're able to help smaller counties see things coming their way as well."

Using the Crime Stoppers app, website or by calling 317-262-TIPS, Hoosiers can leave anonymous tips. Needleman said tipsters are never identified.

13News also went inside Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana to see how the anonymity process works.

"I want them to feel comfortable calling Crime Stoppers with an anonymous tip," Needleman said.

In central Indiana, Needleman said some of the most reported crimes include child trafficking and drugs way stronger than fentanyl.

"We're asking you to keep your neighborhood safe," Needleman said. "Something you see as a simple tip can be the difference in solving crime, and it happens literally every day."
