Police apprehend suspect who allegedly led Plainfield officer on chase that ended in deadly crash

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Aug. 30 at U.S. 40 and Smith Road.

PLAINFIELD, Ind. — Police have arrested the man who allegedly led Plainfield police on a chase that ended in a deadly crash.

IMPD officers with the Southeast Violent Crimes Task Force and Violence Reduction Team took 38-year-old Bryan Goodmon, of Fillmore, Indiana, into custody Monday, Sept. 16.

Goodmon is being held at the Hendricks County Jail without bond, due to his pending felony arrest warrant.

Around 5:45 p.m. Aug. 30, officers responded to a report of a person down at a Long John Silver's restaurant.

Avon Deputy Chief of Investigations Brian Nugent, whose department is handling the investigation, said Goodmon was possibly impaired as he was sitting in a car at the restaurant.

When a Plainfield officer approached Goodmon, he drove away and nearly hit the officer with his car.

The officer pursued the vehicle onto U.S. 40, resulting in a brief chase.

The suspect vehicle crossed through the intersection at Smith Road, but when the officer followed, their cruiser collided with a gray Ford that was in the intersection.

Both occupants of the Ford were killed in the crash. The coroner identified the victims as 78-year-old Barbara Williams and 79-year-old Bennie Williams. Family told 13News the couple had lived in Clayton, Indiana, for decades.

The officer was taken to the hospital in what police described as "stable" condition. Police said the officer was released from the hospital Friday evening with what was described as "minor injuries."

Toxicology reports are pending for both drivers involved in the crash. However, investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol impairment were factors in the crash.

The driver of the Kia left the scene. That vehicle was later found, but was unoccupied.

About two weeks after the crash, police said they were still searching for Goodmon, identifying him as the suspect in the case. Arrest warrants were issued for Goodmon for resisting law enforcement causing death, as well as outstanding warrants out of Marion County prior to the incident.
