23-year-old suspect charged after being shot by Carmel police when crashing into squad car

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. Sunday in the 12800 block of Old Meridian Street, near West Main and North Pennsylvania streets.

CARMEL, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after a suspect was shot by a Carmel Police Department officer during an incident Sunday evening.

Just before 8 p.m. Aug. 11, officers responded to the apartments at 12800 block of Old Meridian Street, near West Main and North Pennsylvania streets.

According to court documents, a resident at the apartment called police to report a suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Daniel Castillo, of Carmel, who was harassing his girlfriend and him. The couple was "terrified" as they locked their bedroom door when they heard Castillo "repeatedly banging on the door."

When police arrived on scene, they found Castillo in a car on the third floor of the apartment parking garage. Police said an officer parked his vehicle in front of Castillo's car and ordered him to get out of the car, but Castillo refused.

Another officer arrived, and police said Castillo still refused to get out of the car. That's when he allegedly rammed into a Carmel Police SUV. An officer then shot his gun through the windshield of the car, hitting Castillo. Despite being shot, police said Castillo continued to spin his tires while hitting the police vehicle.

Court documents say Castillo had been in contact with the girlfriend prior to the incident and had called her over 190 times and left several messages including, "I'll see you soon" and "I can't wait till you die."

State police said detectives arrested Castillo Aug. 12 in connection with the incident. He has since been charged with two counts of attempted aggravated battery, two counts of resisting law enforcement, two counts of criminal recklessness with a weapon, criminal mischief damager and harassment by telephone.
