IFD: Woman killed in house fire on Indy's east side; family of 4 displaced

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is dead and a family is displaced after a house fire on Indy's east side Sunday morning.

According to IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith, fire crews were dispatched shortly after 4 a.m. Aug. 11 in the 4500 block of East 19th Street, just east of Forest Manor Park.

Reith said there was a family of four – consisting of two adults, two children and one dog – who lived at the house, and another woman lived on the other side of the house, who was home at the time of the fire.

IFD said a male and a female walking by the home saw the fire in the window. They called 911 and pounded on doors and windows to help wake them up.

The family of four and their dog were able to evacuate. IFD said they lived on the unburned side of the house.

However, IFD said the other side was occupied by a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reith said the female passerby sustained a "slight injury" after the window broke and cut her hand when she hit it.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Reith said this is the fourth fatal fire in the IFD service district this year.
