INDIANAPOLIS — Hurricane Helene's rain and winds have led to disruptions in football games and school activities across central Indiana.

IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Robert Faulkens says there is always a plan in place for weather disruptions.

"This is the third time this year, already this season, we've had to move games," Faulkens said. "It's not unusual. We have a plan, and pretty much everyone knows what that plan is."

State rules in Indiana only allow one football game in a five-day span.

"So if our games are cancelled tonight and you can't play tomorrow," Faulkens said, "you have to play Monday. If you play Monday, you can't play again until Saturday."

When it comes to regular-season games, Faulkens says it's up to the schools to reschedule.

"We do have a provision where if the game cancelled would determine a conference championship," Faulkens said, "we have to make some adjustments so that game can be played at some point."

The priority, Faulkens says, is keeping student athletes and their fans safe.

"We leave this in the hands of the local authorities, local principals, athletic directors, and coaches to make the right decision based on the health and safety on the kids that are participating and the people that are coming to the game," Faulkens said. "We are not going to put people in harm's way just to have a contest."
