INDIANAPOLIS — The pattern for central Indiana ahead of Halloween remains quiet, with a dramatic warm up on the way!
Temperatures will feel a little closer to where we expect central Indiana to be this time of year. With pleasant low 60s during the day, and crisp and almost chilly temperatures overnight.
The hunt for rain in October
But aside from the importance of the Halloween forecast for the spooky festivities and costume-concerned, it may also be the best chance for rain in central Indiana for the entire month of October.
There have only been two days in the entire month of October where the Indianapolis International Airport received rain.
There was 0.07" inches of rain on Oct. 15, and just this past Friday, 0.02" of rain fell.
That brings the total for the month at the official Indianapolis climate site to less than 1/10".
And that's one for the record books. If no additional rain falls, that would rank this October as the driest on record.
October's Best Chance
But there's hope to at least get some rain before the month has ended. The last day of the month will see the most active pattern we've seen the entire month.
A strong cold front brings a dramatic cool-down, and a chance for rain as the front passes.
Ahead of the front, on Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures will be 20 degrees above average, with highs near record temperatures of the low 80s.
But late Wednesday night, the front will approach from the west. Though timing may be subject to some adjustment, it appears that rain will be more likely early in the day.
Temperatures will likely be in the 70s on early Thursday. But cooler air will follow the front, and temperatures will be dropping through the day. Evening temperatures are expected to be in the 50s.
Unfortunately, because there's not much moisture with the front, and it's expected to be moving through within a few hours, rainfall totals are not expected to be very impressive.
Less than a quarter of an inch of rain is a reasonable forecast. Though, there may be some locations that pick up a bit more.
This will likely cement October 2024 as one of the driest on record.
