INDIANAPOLIS — Throughout this month, average high temperatures will drop 13 degrees and we'll lose one hour and 15 minutes of daylight.

Oct. temperatures in Indianapolis

The average high and low temperatures on Oct. 1 are 72 and 51. Those numbers will drop to 59 and 40 by Oct. 31, respectively. The hottest temperature recorded in Indianapolis during the month of Oct. is 92 degrees on both October 1 and 2, 2019. In total, there have only been six days during the month of Oct. when Indy had a high of 90 degrees or more.

The coldest temperature recorded in October in Indy is 20 degrees from October 26, 1962, October 28, 1976, and October 24, 1981.

How common is it to see measurable snow in Indianapolis during October?

Despite having an average snowfall for the month, albeit only 0.1 inches, it's very rare. There have only been 10 Octobers with measurable snowfall with one major snow event bringing not only the earliest snow recorded on record for Indy (Oct. 18), but a record amount for the month with a total of 9.3 inches of snow from Oct. 18-20, 1989.

Oct. brings the first fall days to see frost in Indy

On average, the first patchy frost on Oct. 17 (low temperature of 36 degrees). The first average frost date is Oct. 26 (low of 32 degrees).

We will also lose over an hour of daylight this month

On Oct. 1, the Indy metro sees 11 hours and 45 minutes of daylight. By Oct. 31, we will only get 10 hours and 30 minutes. This will continue to drop all the way through the winter solstice on Dec. 21 with 9 hours and 21 minutes of daylight.
