INDIANA, USA — Get ready for more unsettled weather with scattered showers and storms returning to the weekend. After a stunning weekend with lower humidity and sunshine, we will go back to tracking on-and-off rain chances next week.

Tap HERE to track rain chances with our interactive radar.

The culprit for bringing back more rain chances? An upper level low pressure system.

What is an upper level low?

It's going to get a little nerdy for a moment. Lower pressure tends to bring more clouds and rain and snow chances. You can have it on the ground or surface, and you can have it higher up in the atmosphere. How they coordinate between the two heights in the atmosphere dictates how efficiently the atmosphere creates rain chances. Generally upper-level lows help strengthen surface lows.

Next week we will have more of an upper level low pressure system sit over Indiana, but surface lows look pretty week. That means we will probably just see scattered rain chances and clouds, with some sunshine in between. It will help make the sky look more tropical with some storms here and there.

Now if a surface low also comes in at the right angle, we could see more robust rain form and higher severe weather chances. Time will tell.

Rain chances coming back

While it won't rain every day next week, there will at least be a chance every day of the work week. There will be parts of Indiana that may only get a rain a few times during the week, but we will be tracking scattered storm chances on-and-off.

Right now it looks like the core of the low pressure may swing into Indiana just right on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the slightly higher rain chances, but this could slightly change.

How much rain is coming?

We are expecting the radar to have lots of scattered downpours over the course of the week. That can bring highly ranging rainfall totals. However in generally we are expecting a half inch to a full inch or rain across much of Indiana.

A few spots will pick up more, maybe even a couple inches. There will likely be a couple spots that don't pick up as much.

Expect the weather to be a little more surprising next week with timing of individual rain storms for your specific neighborhood.
