Rainfall projections for Indiana the next few days | Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog

A powerful cold front is on the way, finally breaking through the blocking high pressure system. Expect a few days of scattered rain and downpours.

INDIANA, USA — Finally rain is in the forecast, and not just a few drops, but possibly an inch or two!

A cold front is about to completely break the high pressure blocking pattern we have been stuck in with hot, sunny weather for multiple weeks. Three days of scattered rain chances are moving in. Tally them all up, and could pick up 1-2 inches of rainfall by Wednesday morning.

It will not rain constantly the next 3 days, rather expect on-and-off rounds. Every Hoosier will have a slightly different rain timeline due to the scattered nature of the rain and storms. When you add up all the various rounds, we should come out with decent totals across much of the state.

Good news:  We are not expecting widespread severe weather with these rain chances! There may be some stronger storms at times, but many times it should be rainy with thunder.

Which days will likely be the rainiest

Not every day will be equal. We will be watching the upper-level pattern to see which days are most supportive for cloud growth and rain production.

This is our best guess. Expect changes:

  • Sunday will likely be the rainiest day thanks to more widespread coverage. Expect rounds of rain in the morning and in the evening, with lots of dry times in between. Downpours and lightning will be possible.
  • Monday will be more isolated. There is a good chance you get rain at times throughout the day, but expect the drier time windows to be longer. Much of Monday's rain may come later in the evening and night hours.
  • Tuesday will be scattered, but the downpours may be heavier. Higher rainfall rates are possible in some of the hit-or-miss cells.

How much rain are we expecting

Expect changes. Because of the scattered nature of the rain, rainfall totals may greatly range, even from county to county. However there is a decent shot that most of the state tries to pick up an inch of rainfall over the next 3 days.

More consistent rain chances in central Indiana may lead to totals closer to 1.5" for the next few days. It will not fall all at once.

What you get may could be slightly more or slightly less. This is our best guess looking at rain coverage patterns.

In some parts of Indiana with the biggest rain storms, you could pick up locally 2-3 inches of rain. There is a low threat for temporarily flash flooding.

Rain chances

A few rounds of rain will move west to east. There should be a decent shot for some rain after sunrise and up to lunch time.

Another round of rain may develop later Sunday evening, but the exact placement and the rainfall intensity will have to be seen. Generally expect more on-and-off rain in the evening and night hours, heading into Monday morning.

Monday and Tuesday will get messier. The system is extremely messy because it's trying to be ripped up by higher pressure to the east. Scattered rain will be possible with breaks.

No matter how much rain you get, the cooler air will be moving in. Expect a long stretch of 70s, which is where we should be this time of year.
