INDIANA, USA — It's about to get really hot across Indiana. Next week (June 17-21), temperatures will soar in the mid 90s with heat index values near 100 degrees. This will be by far the hottest weather of the year so far.

On top of the heat, this coming week has some of the highest sun angles of the entire year. That means the intensity of the sun will peak. UV index values will reach between 9 and 10, meaning sunburn times will be nearly 20 minutes across Indiana. The farther south you go, the higher the UV index. Limited puffy cumulus clouds will not block the sun much the next several days.

A high pressure system is moving into the Appalachians. That means cold fronts will not be able to push into Indiana for the next several days. Lots of sunshine and little cloud cover will help the sun bake the Great Lakes and the southern U.S. There may be an isolated pop-up shower or two in the afternoons the next few days as the heat and humidity spike. A few of these may bring some gusty winds and some relief from the heat. However these will likely be spotty. Most of us will continue to bake.

Because Indiana is just northwest of the high pressure center, a light south wind will help boost the humidity and heat. If the wind can connect with the Gulf of Mexico, it may be able to bring in enough humidity to pop a stray shower or storm.

Any of these rain chances are very limited. Generally expect sunny skies. If you get a stray heat shower, then you will be able to cool off for a moment.
