INDIANA, USA — A strong cold front is on the way to Indiana for Friday, bringing scattered rain chances and some chilly northwest winds. Everyone will get the cool air quickly rushing in, especially Friday evening, but not everyone will get rain.

This front is moving fast. Most of central Indiana will get some rain around the late morning and early afternoon. Eastern Indiana will continue to get some rain chances into the evening.

A few storms may turn severe, especially in eastern Indiana.

Timing the rain zones for Friday

It's not going to rain all day. In fact, most of the day will be dry. There are parts of Indiana that have higher chances than others at varying times of the day. Let's go through those.

Friday morning (6 a.m.-11 a.m.):  Lafayette, Kokomo, Peru, Marion, Crawfordsville

We'll watch our front start approaching central Indiana in the morning. Most of the state has the chance for a spotty shower at least. A higher concentration of some rain and downpours will be northwest of Indianapolis. At this point, we are not expecting severe weather, just some hit-or-miss rain.

(NOTE: These are rain chances. Not everyone will get rain, though.)

Friday afternoon (12 p.m.-5 p.m.):  Richmond, Connersville, Greensburg, Columbus, New Castle, Rushville

Expect rain chances to quickly press east in the middle of the day. By the afternoon, the bulk of the showers and storms will likely be east of Indianapolis. As we heat up east of Indy, a few of these showers may turn into thunderstorms.

Once the front clears Indianapolis in the early afternoon, the rain cells should grow and turn into a few thunderstorms for eastern Indiana.

Friday evening (6 p.m.-8 p.m.):  Richmond, Connersville, Greensburg, Brookville

Once we get to the evening, a lot of central Indiana should be drying out. There could be a spotty shower, but the vast majority of rain will be around Brookville Lake and parts of southeastern Indiana.

Areas in the dark green will not constantly get rain. Expect the rain cells to be hit-or-miss even in the highest chance zones.

Friday night (9 p.m. - 5 p.m.):  Mostly near the Ohio River

Overnight for Friday night, expect a lot of dry weather. There may be a spotty shower to the far south near the Ohio River, or to the far north closer to Lake Michigan.

Severe weather chances

This storm should not be a widespread severe weather maker for Indiana. However, do not be surprised if we get a severe thunderstorm warning or two in southern and eastern Indiana. As the front arrives in these locations during the middle of the afternoon, this will be the best chance to create some storms with low hail and wind potential.

Areas back to the west should be clear of severe weather, including Indianapolis. The front will be arriving around lunch time, pushing most of the rain chances east for the rest of the day.

How much rain can we expect?

Everyone is going to get something different. The cells will be not widespread. There will likely be a lot of space between some of the showers and storms. In those places, we'll get some clouds but we may stay completely dry.

Places that get a shower or storm head on could pick up a good quarter inch of rain or so. Expect nothing in a lot of areas, and expect some Indiana towns to get a quick downpour.

Quick warmup, then a quick cool down

Before the front, expect the temperatures to quickly climb to mid 70s. After that, your high temperature will be based on the timing of the front. The western half of Indiana may stay in the 70s for the rest of the afternoon while some 80s will be possible in the eastern half of Indiana.

On our day planner, we have rain chances all the way through. That is because we expect a shower or storm to be somewhere present in central Indiana for most of the daylight hours.

However, for your town, only expect a few hours of rain chances. Much of the day will be dry.

Winds will be the next story for the evening. Expect it to be breezy and a bit cool during Friday evening. Bring an extra layer to some of the high school football games across the state. If you live in eastern Indiana, you may want the umbrella, too.
