Indianapolis officially hit 90 degrees on Saturday, marking the 12th 90+ degree day so far of 2024. Today will be a very similar set-up with highs in the low 90s under a mostly to partly sunny sky. Dew points will climb slightly, so you may notice higher humidity during the day,

Highs will again be in the low 90s on Monday, but additional moisture in the atmosphere will push the heat index to 95-100 degrees.

Excessive heat in the forecast for Tuesday through Thursday

We'll be watching out for the potential of dangerous heat Tuesday through Thursday afternoons which could easily be the hottest stretch of temperatures so far this summer. Highs will likely be in the mid 90s with a heat index from 100-110 degrees. Plan ahead now if you work or must spend time outdoors during this stretch as the risk of heat-related illnesses is elevated.

While the high heat will be the focus of the forecast, a few storms are possible as central Indiana sits on the periphery of the heat dome. While limited, storms would most likely develop in the late afternoon/evening and erode during the overnight hours this week.

This heat streak will continue through the work week but a cold front is forecast to move through the area late Friday. This will prompt a few scattered storms but also help to break the high heat with temperatures, while still above average, drop into the 80s next weekend.

Some good news for those who aren't fans of this heat — the Climate Prediction Center says we have a 40-50% chance of below average temperatures to kick off the month of September.
