Storms likely Thursday afternoon with chance of severity

Be Weather Aware Thursday with Watches and/or Warnings likely between midday and late-evening.

INDIANAPOLIS — A quiet summer day in central Indiana full of sunshine for areas north of Bloomington, Columbus and North Vernon.

Far southern Indiana will have more cloud cover but remain dry despite an oppressively humid air mass south of I-70. That muggy air drifts northward the next 24 hours and sets the stage for an uncomfortably hot, humid day on Thursday as heat indices near 100 degrees outside of thunderstorms.

You'll want to be Weather Aware Thursday with the likelihood of some storms becoming severe, especially those that develop between 2-10 p.m. However, we should note that storms are possible from sunrise to the evening.

All hazards of severe weather are possible within any storms on radar Thursday, including some that could rotate.

The front that will be the main triggering mechanism for these storms Thursday is also what delivers a refreshing airmass heading into the weekend. Dewpoints tomorrow reach the mid-70s before dropping into the 50s in the wake of the frontal passage Friday.

That's pleasant for mid-July standards and will feel even better coming on the heels of some of the muggiest air we get around here.

Friday looks fantastic with increasing sunshine, a comfortable Muggy Meter, and seasonably warm highs in the lower/mid 80s. Plenty of sunshine this weekend, but there is a chance of spotty thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. We may have to adjust coverage wording in the coming days, but there should be ample dry time this weekend to enjoy the comfortable air.
