INDIANAPOLIS — What a difference just a few hours made with the cold front that sliced through central Indiana last night! At 2 a.m. the temperature in Indianapolis was nearly 70 degrees, and by 10 a.m., temperatures had dropped below freezing with windchills in the teens.
That's definitely a jolt to the system!
You'll see flurries and snow showers around central Indiana before the overcast layer clears from west to east this afternoon. Despite a brightening sky, temperatures will hover around freezing this afternoon with windchills parked in the teens courtesy of a stinging northwesterly wind.
This all comes after a stormy start earlier this morning as the aforementioned front finally delivered the lift needed to break the strong atmospheric cap that kept us free from the rain for most of yesterday.
Storm report analysis shows three distinct tracks from:
- Northwestern Illinois-Chicago-Detroit
- I-70 corridor across Indiana into Ohio (with potential tornado damage between Dayton and Columbus to our east)
- South/along the Ohio River
As of now, there hasn't been any tornado damage reported in the WTHR viewing area, but undoubtedly there will be some roof repairs needed with hail tracks across southern Marion County into parts of Morgan/Johnson/Shelby counties.
There's some quieter weather on deck tonight into Thursday, though it comes with frosty cold lows in the teens/lower 20s tonight. We will have plenty of sun on deck tomorrow and much warmer highs in the mid 40s.
We're still calling for clouds to return Friday with some chilly showers at times during the day. This feature departs by Saturday afternoon to allow for increasing sunshine and highs returning to the 60s. Sunday looks to be the better and certainly warmer day this weekend as highs near 70 degrees.
We will be monitoring trends early next week with more storm potential Monday into Tuesday.
Stay weather aware and check back for updates.
