INDIANAPOLIS — We're seeing a lull from the rain and storms through the early afternoon as a warm front sits stationary over central Indiana. Temperatures will be dependent on where this frontal boundary stays today creating a sharp gradient with highs north in the 50s to the 70s south. Look for highs in the upper 60s around the metro this afternoon.
The risk of strong storms ramps back up after 4 p.m. and will continue into the evening. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the primary threat, but rotating storms can't be ruled out. The Storm Prediction Center has all of the central and southern portions of the state under a level 2 of 5 for the risk of scattered severe storms.
The threat of severe storms will diminish overnight, but widespread, heavy rain continues as the core of this weather system moves through. This could lead to localized flooding with some spots seeing an excess of 2 inches of rainfall by Tuesday morning.
Ahead of the actual cold front moving through, temperatures look to still recover to near 70 around the metro Tuesday afternoon. When the boundary arrives, another round of showers and storms will be possible between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
We'll see a sharp drop in temperatures behind the cold front with lows Wednesday morning falling all the way into the mid 30s. Moisture will wrap around the backside of this system and could prompt a wintry mix across the northern tier of the state with scattered rain showers elsewhere. Highs will be limited to the upper 30s, near 40 Wednesday afternoon. It'll be a blustery day as well with strong wind gusts up to 40 mph at times.
This system will be slow to depart and even keeps a chance for a few rain/mixed showers around through the first part of the day Thursday with morning lows near the freezing mark and highs struggling to hit the 40-degree mark.
We'll dry out for the remainder of the week but keep the unseasonably cool air around with lows near freezing and highs only in the upper 40s Friday. We'll bring back sunshine and more seasonal temperatures for the weekend.
