Record-Tying Cold Monday Morning

Record-Tying Cold Monday Morning

It was a record-tying cold morning in Indianapolis with an official low at the NWS Office of 2°.

That tied the daily record low originally set in 1873, marks the coldest March temperature since 2015, and is one of only 22 March days with a low temperature that cold.

However, there were several cities with lows well below zero Monday morning... a direct result of fresh snow, clear sky, and unseasonably cold air in place.

Anyway you slice it a bitter start and with wind chills of -20 to -10.

Sunshine today will be very deceiving as "highs" struggle into the upper teens... a good 10° colder than average the "low" for today and nearly 30° below the average high.

Another frigid night of lows in the single digits and subzero wind chills. "IF" lows drop into the single digits again in Indy and would be the first time in recorded history (147 years) for the city of back-to-back March days of single digit lows. Truly rare air and hopefully the coldest we'll be until next fall/winter.

An stronger upper disturbance moves across the region Tuesday afternoon and triggers scattered flurries/snow showers... perhaps enough to dust-up the ground again. This also reinforces the chill for another couple of days too.

We're still on target for much warmer air this weekend, but to get to that air we'll likely have to go through some snow Thursday afternoon/night. It's too early to say if it will accumulate much... but it is a possibility.

A spring-like system hits the Ohio Valley this weekend bringing windy, wet conditions by Saturday evening and a surge into the mid/upper 50s. Well need to monitor this closely for potential severe storms Saturday night/early Sunday morning - Sean Ash
