Fall-like weekend ahead of near-record warmth next week | Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog

After a crisp weekend, a warm pattern returns next week and possibly brings record warmth with it.

INDIANAPOLIS — Temperatures are going to roller coaster big time over the next week. For some this afternoon, you're back in the mid/upper 70s. For others, it looks and feels more like autumn with a thicker deck of clouds, 60s and feeling some 15° cooler than 24 hours ago.

We've advertised a couple of frosty nights this week, and the first arrives tonight as the wind and cloud cover diminish. Plan on a heavier coat Thursday morning with temperatures the 30s.

Another cold front arrives Friday with a scattering of showers and possibly some rumbles of thunder before the coverage of rain diminishes in the afternoon. This sets the stage for a mainly clear and crisp weekend that features widespread frost Sunday morning.

But the wind returns to the south early next week and strengthens, too. We'll have a steady diet of a balmy breeze that not only brings balmy afternoon, but eventually brings some rather mild nights in the middle of next week. It's conceivable that overnight lows Tuesday-Thursday will be near the average high for late October!

We'll be on record-high temperature watch next Tuesday (10/29) and Wednesday (10/30) as we flirt with 80°.

The balmy air lingers into Halloween, but we'll have to fine-tune the timing of an expected cold front late next week for the potential of rain impacting trick-or-treating.

At minimum, it appears next Thursday morning (Halloween) will be rather balmy. How mild it finishes is dictated on the timing of that next cold front and any precipitation associated with it. With or without precipitation, temperatures this Halloween in central Indiana look to be well above average — it's just a matter of where it fall in the history books.

It's too early to have great confidence on when it arrives, but we do expect a front to move across the state sometime between Wednesday night and Friday night. Stay tuned for updates.
