INDIANAPOLIS — Much needed rain finally returns to the Indianapolis area today. There is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, with around 2” of precipitable water available.
A trigger mechanism is needed to allow the atmosphere to squeeze out that moisture.
An area of low pressure will move over central Indiana today, pulling the trigger to release the moisture.
Heavy rain will be possible with flash flooding a risk at times today.
A severe thunderstorm will be possible, especially along and south of I-74.
Damaging winds will be the main threat. Temperatures will only climb into the low 80s this afternoon.
There will be two rounds of storms today. The second round will arrive this evening.
There is a lower chance that the evening storms will be severe, as the environment should be worked over at that point.
