INDIANAPOLIS — Wednesday marks the 30th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew hitting southeast Florida.
Andrew made landfall as a Category 5 with winds up to 165 mph. Winds peaked at 170 mph and there were three landfalls with this hurricane. The first was in the Bahamas. Eleuthra Island had a storm surge of 23 feet.
We know the destruction left behind across south Florida. The third landfall was in Louisiana with almost a foot of rain.
Here is the track of Andrew:
It was the first storm of that 1992 hurricane season. It was also the costliest and most destructive at the time. Thirty years later, Andrew is still one of the top five most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the United States.
