Hurricane Matthew is moving toward the east-northeast near 13 mph. This storm movement is expected to continue this evening and early Sunday. Matthew will be near the coast of southern North Carolina later this evening. The maximum sustained winds remain near 75 mph with high wind gusts. Weakening is expected during the next 48 hours and will likely decrease to a Tropical Storm by early Sunday morning. The Tropical Storm category means that the storm will have 39 to 73 mph winds. Below are computer model forecasts of where this system will go next. The majority of the models have the system taking a southerly turn and weakening into a Tropical Depression in the middle of the Atlantic. A Tropical Depression wind speeds are less than 38 mph.
