How to avoid rain, wind at the polls | Live Doppler 13 Weather Blog

Make sure to bring a rain jacket to wait in line at the polls as we expect several showers across Indiana during Election Day.

INDIANAPOLIS — Today is a "Weather Impact Day" as a Wind Advisory will be in effect until 3 p.m. for parts of central Indiana ahead of heavy rain expected later this afternoon and evening.

Wind Advisory for northwestern counties through 3 p.m.

Indiana is sitting in the "warm sector" of a low pressure system today, which will keep gusty southerly winds up to 45 mph at times. This will keep temperatures elevated despite cloudy skies and stray showers moving through. Highs will make a run at record for Nov. 5 in the mid to upper 70s.

Heavy rain likely after 3 p.m. from west to east

The cold front will prompt a line of showers, some heavy. This is set to move into the western tier of Indiana around 3 p.m. and track east into the metro from around 7-9 p.m. Storms and severe weather are not expected. The earlier you head to the polls, the better the chance you have to stay dry.

Showers will then linger across the southeastern tier of the state through the evening and eventually wrap up by daybreak Wednesday.

How does this Election Day forecast compare to years past?

While today's forecast high of 76 degrees would tie the standing record for Nov. 5, the warmest Election Day was 78 degrees set back on Nov. 4, 2003.

The coldest Election Day had a low of just 15 degrees in 1991; however, the standing record "warm" low is 61 degrees from Nov. 8, 1977 and that will likely be broken today (Indy's low so far today is 66 degrees).

Temperatures stay above average this week

Behind the cold front, skies clear on Wednesday, but temperatures will remain above average with highs in the mid 60s through next weekend. Another chance of rain returns this weekend.
